Is it better to sip or gulp water when you exercise? Keith Warner, president of Highland Water, says “Gulp!” Food and water are essential whether you are going for a bicycle ride or exercising in the gym. Tara Parker-Pope of The New York Times reports on her conversation with Leslie Bonci, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a certified specialist in sports dietetics: “How we drink can make a difference in how optimally we hydrate our body. A lot of people sip liquids, but gulping is better. Gulps of fluid leave the stomach more rapidly. It’s important to do this. It seems counterintuitive, it seems like gulping would cause a cramp. People are more likely to have stomach cramps sipping because fluid stays in their gut too long.”

In addition to helping people to repair their water, there are some other benefits from being a water treatment company in Colorado. In particular, we get to work in one of the most beautiful areas of the world. Plus, we often get greeted by the local inhabitants who are curious about what the heck we’re doing in their backyard. Here are a few of the locals that we recently encountered when testing a homeowner’s water in Evergreen.

Today was a long, but extremely rewarding day as the staff at Highland Water completed a unique well water filtration system. The water we fixed was, what many would consider to be, ‘nasty’ water that smelled, had a very unappealing yellowish-orange color and was filled with iron reducing bacteria.

But, we greeted the challenge with excitement and designed a unique system that combines a powerful disinfection and oxidation system with a filtration system and acid water neutralizer. In the end, we were able to take out the iron in the water, which was causing the color, as well as the bacteria and eliminate them using ozone and all-natural, chemical-free filtration systems.

Perhaps the most compelling part of the project was the fact that we removed failed water treatment equipment, that was installed several years ago by another water treatment company, which cost between 2x and 3x more than the simple and effective system we installed. Our customer is delighted and they now have an elegant, virtually maintenance free water treatment system that will fix their water problems and leave them with water that will no longer cause stains and foul odors in their home, or corrode their plumbing and expensive appliances.

If you are passionate about camping adventures, sky sports, carnivorous plants, or simulated gaming, don’t miss the Outdoor Colorado Expo this weekend, Saturday, March 27th and Sunday, March 28th, at the Fairgrounds and Events Center in Castlerock. And plan to stop by Highland Water’s exhibit at Booth MB117. In support of World Water Week, March 21 to 27, Keith Warner, President of Highland Water, has pledged to donate to the UNICEF Tap Project $2.00 for each person who signs up for a free water test while visiting Highland’s booth or calls the company for a free water testing before March 31. You can help stop children dying from contaminated water. Just a dollar provides a child with 40 days of clean drinking water. Last weekend, in just one day!, more than 30 people signed up for free water testing which means that Highland Water’s donation to the UNICEF Tap Project will provide over 2,400 days of clean water for children in need. Thank you to all who made that donation possible!

There is something for every member of the family at the Outdoor Colorado Expo. The Kids Passport Program will provide children with a wide variety of activities to enjoy and complete during the expo including planting a flower, kayaking, rock climbing wall, and more! By completing this portion of the passport they will receive an award as they leave the show. More importantly, the goal of the program is to get kids to go outside to enjoy the Colorado sun. So the second portion of the passport is coupons and tasks for them to complete during the summer of 2010. An additional reward will be made available for those children completing this second phase of the passport.

Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, bladderworts, and devils claw are among the specimens to be presented by the Colorado Carnivorous Plant Society (CCPS), http://www.coloradocarnivorousplantsociety.com. Dedicated to spreading the love and knowledge of carnivorous plants in Colorado, members of CCPS meet 4 times a year at the Rockrimmon Library in Colorado Springs. Jeremiah Harris is the society’s founder and president.

Consider the cost, advises Keith Warner, President of Highland Water – eight daily glasses of water will be about $.49 per year if you choose to drink your water from a tap. Or, you could spend about 2,900 times as much, about $1,400 yearly, if you drink bottled water.

Is bottled water a healthier option than tap water? According to a report released by the U.S. Congress (http://bit.ly/EwZF9), the Food and Drug Administration has little authority to regulate bottled brands. “Municipal water utilities are required to provide public reports of tests results,” according to www.CNNhealth.com (“Is Your Bottled Water Safe?” July 13, 2009). While you may pay more for bottled water, it doesn’t mean that it’s actually better than what you can get from your faucet.

What are the advantages of bottled water vs. tap water? It’s all in the taste. People who select bottled water do so because they are looking for cleaner, healthier water that tastes better than tap water. Most bottled water uses ozone (a short-life change in the oxygen molecule) as a disinfectant. This leaves no after-taste or smell. However, over time, it decreases in its ability to disinfect and for that reason is not as effective as chlorine over long periods of time. The chlorine used in municipal water sources (tap water) helps to reduce the number of bacteria in the water.

The Natural Resources Defense Council conducted tests on more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands to find out how clean the water is. In one sample, reports Food and Water Watch (http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/water/bottled/bottled-water-illusions-of-purity/) “nearly one in five brands contained more bacteria than allowed under microbiological-purity guidelines adopted by some states, the industry, and the European Union.”

Up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste comes from discarded water bottles. And rather than recycling water bottles over 80% of these bottles are thrown away, despite the fact that the plastic used in the manufacture of bottle beverages is in demand by recyclers due to its high quality. Plastic waste in our oceans poses a huge risk to marine life.

Billions of bottles can also have an impact on climate change. Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, says “More than 90 percent of the environmental impacts from a plastic bottle happen before the consumer opens it.” He foresees the day when the bottle changes, noting research in plastics made from plants.

What Can You Do?

Reduce your bottled water consumption

Take the Food and Water Watch’s Take Back the Tap Pledge http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/water/bottled/bottled-water-illusions-of- purity

Purchase a filter to change the taste of your tap water

Carry your own bottle. Good alternatives to plastic are glass and stainless steel.

Test your knowledge with a water quiz from National Geographic and the RBC Blue Water Project: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/bluewaterproject/quiz.html

Take action. Urge your representative to support the Water Protection and Reinvestment Trust Fund. Click here to send a letter to your representative: http://action.foodandwaterwatch.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1875
